ABOUT GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOGS
Developed in Switzerland as an all-purpose herding, guard, and draft dog. They are the largest of the four types of Sennenhund dogs. The other types are the Bernese, the Entlebucher, and Appenzeller. They are black with tan rust markings, white socks and throat , the chest shows the white cross of the Swiss flag.
Swissys are known for being even-tempered, faithful, dependable, and family oriented. This is a happy breed that loves people! They will bark and can be dominant toward other dogs; they need a master in the home.
They are VERY large strong dogs that require space but need moderate exercise requirements. This breed doesn't really reach "maturity" until 2-3 years of age. Until then, they are very large puppies at heart. They require a great deal of socialization starting at a young age. Training is ESSENTIAL!
The GSMD like to have a job, whether it be pulling a cart, or as a therapy dog, they are wonderful, loyal dogs that are happy to please if they know what is required of them.
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog does have some Breed Health Concerns that have been identified. It is important to understand that these conditions or problems can develop in any purebred or mixed breed dogs, regardless of the line, pedigree or breeder.
